I just download a Wood Hatch pattern it say top save the file in acad.pat folder. I searched for that folder and it suggested the location of the folder to be at Autocad 2008 - userdata catch- support.
When I checked the support folder I could not find the acad.pat folder. How and where do I save a hatch file in my version of AutoCad? If it really said to save it in the acad.pat folder, that's incorrect - there is no such folder. But there is an acad.pat file, that has definitions of hatch patterns in it.
You can add any pattern(s) you want into that file, if that's your preferred approach but see below. You can find where it is by typing this in at the Command line: (findfile 'acad.pat') BUT one thing you need to know is that if you add a pattern definition at the end of that file, you need to end the last line of the code with an Enter, so that the very end of the file is an empty line, not the end of a line of code. An arguably better way to do it, for carrying over to future version upgrades, is to keep each pattern definition that doesn't come in AutoCAD's file in its own separate file.
BUT two things you need to know about that approach are 1) that each file can contain only one pattern definition, and 2) that the file name exclusive of its.pat filetype extension must be exactly the same as the name of the pattern defined in it. Many thanks for the responses.

I am not sure what Alfred NESWADBA has suggested. This is what I did.as suggested. I created a CADSUFF folder and added that in the Autocad2008 userdatacashe support folder with the wood.pat file.
It did not work. I am not sure what it means by “Now add this new folder to the TOP of your support file search path in AutoCAD (Command: Options)”. I open the acad file and copy paste the code at the end of the definitions and added an ENTER at the end without luck.

Acad.pat is your default hatch pattern file's name: you downloaded another? That's the problem, that will not work. 3rd party hatch pattern files must meet the following criteria: 1.
One hatch pattern per file. Hatch pattern name is identical to the PAT file name. One blank line must exist at the end of the pattern definition inside the PAT file. It sounds like you just downloaded someone else's AutoCAD hatch pattern file, which will not only duplicate the ones you have, but may not contain anything new for you to use without having to download other files and replace your own (you never want to do that ever). Go back to the site where you got this from, and read the fine print on installation and usage: if they provided none, you might be wasting your time. Dean Saadallah Add-on products for LT. Thanks for reply- i used a different name for the pat file when you say one hatch pattern per file, do you mean for eg i could only import a brick hatch pattern instead of a whole folder full of patterns when i use the toolsoptions support file import?
I haven't found any instructions on how to download from the website but i generally try and keep it simple from the website-hatchpatterns.com-i click on a link that then allows me to save a zip folder to my pc, i extract it a folder and the pat file shows up as one the files. I then rename it to avoid conflict with acad.pat file i go to acad and add the path fro m the toolsoptions i then use the bhatch command custom tab locate the file click on it -then the 'error in pattern file' message shows up what could i be doing wrong? Any hints appreciated. Like Dean said. Use a text editor to inspect the file you downloaded. Is there a portion of that file headed something like.WOOD,wood pattern.
Followed by some more lines filled with numbers? Extract ALL those lines including the line commencing with. to a file called WOOD.PAT. If a pattern starts with, say,.MAPLE,blabla then extract to a file called MAPLE.PAT Make sure the last line of the file is blank. In general AutoCAD just doesn't pick up patterns from files containing more than one pattern or if the pattern name differs from the name of the file. Actually the ACAD.PAT file is the one exception to this. You CAN append extra patterns to the end of your ACAD.PAT and/or ACADISO.PAT files but this is not advisable as you will lose them when you reinstall AutoCAD.

Use Windows Notepad, open the file, and peak inside: does it have more than one definition? Renaming the file is not enough if you started with someone else' acad.pat file. Not everything you download from the internet is correct or useful, sorry: lots of uninformed masses out there posting pure junk. Also open your own acad.pat file and compare side by side: see if you can isolate any extras. Dean Saadallah Add-on products for LT.
